WRESTLING WITH SHAME?

Replacing shame based thoughts

Adapted from Switch on Your Brain. 2013 by Caroline Leaf. Used by permission of Baker Publishing Group.

If you wrestle with feelings of unresolved guilt or shame, consider using thought replacement when those thoughts and feelings arise.

  • As you notice any shame-based thoughts, immediately, prayerfully, and consciously think your replacement thought (perhaps regarding Jesus’ forgiveness and acceptance of you). Let this thought deeply sink into your spirit as you praise and worship Jesus for his forgiveness and his sacrifice that has covered your sin and made you worthy.

  • Reflect on the positive replacement thoughts. Don’t dwell on the negatives because they will grow. Focus on what you are replacing the negative with.

  • Actively replace your toxic thoughts with positive ones throughout the day.
